Question from BooBoo

My sister is over weight she is three months pregnant and wanting to lose weight. She is afraid that she’ll put on alot of weight and after the baby comes it will be very hard for her to loose it. Is it safe for her to loose weight while pregnant?
she weighs 250 lbs. she is five foot three. I know you arent supposed to loose lots and lots of weight but if she lost twenty thirty pounds but was still eating (just healthier) would that harm the child?

  • uhm… NO it is not safe to try and lose weight while pregnant. tell her to eat healthy and exercise to avoid gaining a lot.

EDIT: it does not matter how overweight she is, she should not TRY to lose weight while pregnant. i was 200 at the beginning of my first three pregnancies and only gained 15 with the first two and 25 with the twins, i lost it the minute they were born, and then some after wards.
all she can do now is eat healthy and exercise, she can work on losing weight after the baby gets here. i have a friend who is 280 and her baby is just fine!

  • Yes, it’s safe for her to try to lose weight naturally while pregnant just by eating right and helthy and getting a little light exercise, like walking. That will especially help her baby not be overweight too and prevent any gestational diabetes.
good luck to her. BTW how heavy is she?

  • no dieting while pregnant is a no-no…her unborn child needs the nutrients to grow healthy…she needs to stick to a low fat high protein diet cutting out all processed sugars…eating lots of fruits and veggies…and tell her to take up walking or something to get her heart rate up she will gain a healthy amount of weight and adopt a healthier lifestyle that will help her lose the weight once the baby is born…but no dieting to lose weight while pregnant!!

edit:no dieting to lose weight while pregnant period!!

  • NO. Dieting during pregnancy is one of the most dangerous things you can do for a developing fetus. She can loose the weight after the baby comes.

  • no its not safe because but she can try to put on 15 20 pounds which is supposed to be healthy. that weight will go with the baby. eat vegetables fruits and healthy stuff like juice. please don’t diet.

  • She shouldn’t TRY to lose weight while pregnant, but she should aim for eating healthier. I was overweight when I got pregnant with my 3rd child, and I immediately began to eat healthier. As a result, I did lose some weight in the beginning, and my docs said that was fine, since I was “a little ahead to begin with!” I ended up gaining only 12 pounds with her and my docs said that was fine. Please tell you sister not to DIET while pregnant, as she may rob the baby of important nutrients. She can work on losing weight after the baby is born and her body recovers. Wish her good luck for me!

  • She should eat a properly balanced diet of around 2,300 calories that includes 10 servings or more of fruit and vegetables, at least 2-3 servings of lean protein, and whole grains.

If she eats very well and normally eats junk it is possible that she won’t gain weight and may even loose some, depending on what her metabolism is like while pregnant.

I, at best, maintain my starting weight while pregnant regardless of what I eat. However the healthier her diet the better off she and the baby will be and the better she will feel.

She should NOT however restrict calories to an unreasonable amount.

  • no it is not safe i too was overweight while preg. i lost weight not by choice but because i could never keep anything down the whole nine months i was in the hospital a few times because of this

  • Niko:

No, absolutely no! No dieting. She should not diet or exercises. Anything but yoga is a no no!
