You can only beocme pregnant once an egg is released from the ovary, so at ovulation. However once a woman enters her fetile period she should start havng intercourse as semen can live for around 5 days in her body, thus ensuring that when she does ovulate there is a supply of sperm waiting for her. The ovulation window is very small if there is no sperm waiting once it occurs and unless intercourse occurs within about 12 hours of the release of the egg the woman will not get pregnant. This is why most fertility experts recommend maing love as soon as a woman notices she is in her fertile period.
You are only fertile during the time that the egg is present (post ovulation)… HOWEVER, sperm can live up to 3 days, in essence waiting for ovulation. Meaning, that even if you haven’t ovulated you can still get pregnant for up to 3 days after you have had intercourse should you ovulate during that time.
