Question from Odile
Exercise is out of the question although I do have a very busy working life as a teacher and looking after my other two children.
I put on a lot of weight with both other kids and although I managed to lose it later with breast feeding – I am not getting any younger and would appreciate some really good dietary tips from ladies who are pregnant, slim and healthy.

Weight gain should be the least of your worries during pregnancy. Eat healthy foods, limit bad fats, and watch how you cook things. Try to stay away from fast foods, deep fry, and starchy foods, and white sugar foods. There are websites you can check out that will let you know according to your bmi what a healthy weight gain would be for you. So far I’ve gained about 16lbs I think. I’m about 35 and a half weeks pregnant.
Simply eat healthy. You know what is good for you and what is not. If you are craving anything sweet eat 100 calorie packs. limit one a day. Also watch your salty snack foods, alternate one a day with sweets. You are more worried about it this time I think you will be fine.
I gained a lot of weight with both pregnancies and lost it all both times but the second time around it was challenging.
#1. good multi vitamin recommended by your OB or Midwife
#2. rest and hydration = less naughty eating
#3. moderation and food pyramid
Eat often and eat adequate; do not eat too many large meals and be sure to get your fruits, veggies, proteins, and complex carbohydrates in. Try Whole Foods for the Whole Family cook book. Google it–it’s great for the whole family. Eat as natural as possible with grains (whole grain) and produce (fresh is better).
Also, allow yourself one naughty a week, be it Dairy Queen, Ben & Jerry’s, or just a small Hershey Kiss. Always remember that what you put on, you’ll have to work to take off. Put in your body what you want baby to eat and don’t put in your body what you don’t want baby to eat.
Hope this helps!!
Eat healthy natural foods from all the food groups, and use color to guide you. Eat foods of every color to get the variety of nutrients, for example, orange foods like sweet potatoes & carrots, red foods like bell peppers and cherries, green foods like spinach salads and broccoli, yellow foods like squash & bananas, blue foods like blueberries & grapes, brown foods like meat and nuts, and white foods like milk, eggs, potatoes & rice.
And do take the prenatal vitamins for extra insurance.
Just stay away from the processed foods, white flour & sugar, and all junk food & fast food.
First make sure you take your pre-natal vitamins everyday and drink lots of water. Its actually the ONLY beverage I drink when pregnant.
Then like anyone not wanting to put on weight you must have a healthy diet.
Try snacking on stuff that is high in vitamins and nutrients like veggies and fruits. Some of my faves are green and red peppers, cucumbers, broccoli and spinach. I either make a great salad or cut them up and dip them in ranch dip made at home with FF sour cream. Another good one is celery or apples with peanut butter. Bananas are good for potassium and help prevent leg cramping too (which i get a lot when preggo). Also to help with regularity I just love the Fiber One breakfast bars.
Stay away from fish…even tuna as it has mercury in it.
Hope this helps and enjoy your pregnancy~
I was concerned about this as well. My doctor suggested following a diet that she gives to pregnant women with gestational diabetes. You basically account for everything you eat and make sure you’re eating the correct “food pyriamid” foods. Also, walking definitely helps. One month I gained 6 pounds and my doctor told me I need to expend more calories. Although I am not high-risk, my doctor is a high risk specialist and has given me great advice that has allowed this to be a very healthy pregnancy (although the morning sickness has not subsided and I’m 35 weeks!!). Ask your doctor about specific diets (and try not to think of it in terms of “dieting” as in wanting to lose weight because that’s not what it is at all, but a pregnancy diet that will allow you to eat healthy).
Best of luck!
I have the oppsite question as you have. I am 5’2′ amd weighed 110 before I got pregnant. I have only gained one pound and am 15 weeks pregnant. However, I do eat healtier now (even though its killing me). I used to eat a lot of fast food and lived on mountain dew. And I’ve never exercised in my life besides bringing the dogs for a walk. I think a lot of it has to do with your genes. I know people who ate as healthy as could possibly be and exercised and still packed on the pounds. My doctor told me that your body will gain what it needs (even though i think my body should be gaining more weight and can’t figure out why I’m not). Just be happy for a healthy baby.
