Question from R&R

So, I am only 11 weeks, however, my jeans are actually feeling more snug!:( I am freakin out because I have not been eating any more than before i was pregnant. I am scared because I dont want to gain too much weight at the end and then have to lose a bunch after the pregnancy. I guess I just want to hear peoples stories about how they ate and exercised and how much they gained in their pregnancy. xxThanksxx

  • Your almost in the second trimester (13 weeks) you are supposed to be gaining a pound a week. Honestly I eat Constantly and have gained 20lbs and you cannot even tell (I walk everyday) and doc says I am right on track at 29 weeks pregnant.

Eat what you want but go for walks when you can and you will be fine.

  • I couldnt fit in my jeans at 11 weeks either. Dont worry about the weight…you always hear the horror stories about people never losing the weight but i didnt have to excersize at all…within 2 months i was back to my normal clothes, and i just took care of my baby and layed around alot. I gained 50 pounds in all, i ate alot of popsycles and chocolate ;)

  • It’s hard, I eat what I want (I’m not good at eating healthy) and I walk when I can. The earlier you start off with walking the better. It has a lot to do with your metabolism and lifestyle. I’m aiming to gain no more than 25 pounds total. To achieve that I plan on walking and trying to cut out the sweets that I have been craving like crazy! All you can do is your best. Good luck!

  • Just make sure u do a lot of walking. taht is very important. Dont go on a diet tho,, nows not the time. U never want to have regrets about something u did or didnt do taht could have possibly harmed ur child. When u get to the last trimester thats when u gain the most weight so make sure u stay moving, esp since thats when its harder to do so!

  • I don’t worry about that. eat healthy and lightly exercise. walking is really good. you will need to set the whole “too much weight gain” aside. you need to focus on your baby. you can always exercise afterward.

  • I ate whatever I wanted (mostly sweets) and didn’t exercise much, ended up gaining over 40lbs! Don’t eat a lot of junk and at least walk everyday. That’s what my doc told me. Should have listened.

  • J:

The first trimester is a big vat of queasy, b!tchiness, and bloating. Don’t freak out if they’re snug…I had to buy maternity jeans at 5 weeks, but now that’ I’m 22 weeks along I am fitting better into my “regular sized” scrub pants than I was a few weeks ago. It takes your body time to figure itself out.

Don’t focus on dieting at this time. Instead, focus on putting good, nourishing food into your body. Skip the pie, eat the pureed pumpkin with some pumpkin spice. Skip the chips, have a pickle or two or a handful of pretzels. Concentrate on not falling into “but I’m eating for two!” trap. Eat like you’d normally eat, but be extra healthy about it. Once you’re past the second trimester, you’ll need to add an additional 250-400 calories to your diet (but if your doc recommends a different amount, do what s/he says ;) ), which is like an extra bowl of cereal a day with some fruit.

As far as excersize goes, if you have access to an indoor pool, use it! It’s non-jarring, great cardiovascular excersize. Walking is your next best bet, with a few weight bearing excersizes thrown in for good measure (like dumbbell curls for example). Stretch, reach as much of your body as you can, and treat it like a temple. This is -not- the time for jumping jacks, trampolines, or jogging. Same goes for high-impact sports.

I’m naturally a tubby girl (199 lbs prior to pregnancy) and I didn’t gain a single pound until I was like 18 weeks along. I’m 206 now at 22 weeks. I was terrified of getting fatter, but I’m surpressing the urge to starve by concentrating on good food in correct amounts. Don’t go psycho-crazy about calorie counting, just pay attention to your body, get 3 servings of calcium (dont’ forget that dairy isn’t your only available source…greens are fabulous for ‘em, and they ahve iron, too!).

Lastly, remember that a lot of weight gained in pregnancy is extra fluid (your blood volume doubles), your boobs get bigger (I think it’s like 4 lbs heavier), your uterus takes up more weight as it grows….it doesn’t have to be mostly fat :)

And as an added bonus, nature gaev us a way to help shed extra baby weight without diet and excersize post-birth. Breastfeeding burns an additional 300-500 calories a day, depending on how frequently you nurse. Pretty cool, heh? :)

Congratulations, good luck, and try not to stress over it!

    oh, I almost forgot!
Roundabout now (and if not now, then soon) is when you shouldn’t be doing any floor excersizes (ie sit ups). Your uterus has more mass and if you lay on your back for too long it can press on your vena cava (big vein in your belly that brings blood to your heart)—plus sit ups can cramp the uterus. If you find you must do some belly excersizes, stand by a chair with your hand on it for balance and slowly (the slower the better/bigger burn) bring your leg up until you feel it down low, then switch legs. Also, sit in a chair, put your hand behind your head, and slowly mimic a curl up it a sitting position, stopping when you feel your abdomen contract.

  • Your jeans probably would feel a little snug around now. Mine didn’t, but only because they were a little loose beforehand, so instead of feeling tight, they actually fit better. Do not worry so much about calorie intake. You are supposed to be taking in MORE calories than you did prior to getting pregnant. Just make sure that the calories that you are taking in are largely good calories. Lots of protein and vitamins, etc… Start a nice, light exercise routine with the approval of your doctor. Walking, swimming (if you live near a place with a heated pool) prenatal yoga… something like that. You’ll be fine… don’t stress it too much. Just don’t go crazy on the fast food, either. ;)

  • Well you are going to gain weight! Its what happens when you are pregnant. The baby, bag of waters, extra blood volume and all that weighs about 15 lbs at the end of your pregnancy. All you can do is eat healthy and to excersizes that are approved by your doctor. But dont worry about the weight, in the end what matters is a healthy baby.

  • i was the same way but then i realized the weight is for the baby thats what matters not how i look.. i gained 40 and lost 20 when he came out and 10 more since ive been breast feeding its not that big of a deal the weight comes off..

  • Hey im 19 weeks with my first and started out at at 112 pounds (51kg).
It was at around 11 weeks some of my under wear and some of my tighter pairs of jeans started feeling uncomfortably tight.
You need to keep in mind that you put on weight because your blood volume increases, your body creates fat stores, you put on weight in your breasts and a number of other things in preparation for the baby.
I try to eat healthily and always get my five fruit and veg a day. If i eat something unhealthy i just have a piece of fruit or something to make up for it later.
Try to go for even a short walk each day and try not to worry about it too much. After all you can always lose the weight after the baby is born and your main concern is the babys health right now.
Losing weight or going on a diet is not healthy.
At twenty weeks im up to 120 pounds and i couldnt really care less.
My partner is supportive and tells me how beautiful he thinks i look which make the whole thing much easier.
Dont be too hard on yourself and enjoy the experience!!
    Good luck
