Question from Preggers w/#1

Twins runs in my family (both of my grandmothers were from a set of twins) and I’m 6 weeks pregnant and I’m curious as to how many weeks pregnant you have to be before the doctor can see two babies on the ultrasound. If I am pregnant with twins I’d like to know as soon as possible so I can be prepared.

  • I saw my twins and heard their heartbeats at 7 weeks!!! If you had an ultrasound already and they didnt say they saw 2 egg sacs or 2 fetal poles then you probably arent having twins!! Ohh and they may have said something about your levels being HIGH!! Thats what the nurse said to me when she called me to tell me I was pregnant. She said “Gee, your levels are quite high.” Good Luck and congrats!!

  • I was 6 weeks pregnant when i experienced very bad bleeding. I thought that i was having a miscarriage. After they did the ultrasound in the ER, they told me that i was expecting twins. Unfortunatley 3 days later, I went for another ultrasound, and infact did lose one of the babies. But I now have a beautiful 4 week old daughter.

  • I believe it will be at your first visit – sometimes double heart beats can be heard. Otherwise, some people find out when they do the sono. My husband is a twin and my brothers are twins and we want one more – we just may get twins!

  • You only have to be a few weeks for an ultrasound to see 2. I was scanned at about 5 weeks and the scan showed 2 sacs.

  • The earliest Ultrasound I had was 4 weeks (2 weeks post conception) they couldn’t find anything. I went for another one at 7 weeks (5 weeks post conception) and the yolk sac was visible along with the heartbeat. I’m only having 1 baby. :) So I’d say that by 7 weeks they should be able to find 2 yolk sacs or 2 heartbeats. Twins also run in my family so I can understand that you want to know and be prepared asap.

  • The first ultrasound should show it (them). My first ultrasound wasn’t until 12 weeks and that’s when we saw the babies. Just a side note: were your grandmothers identical or fraternal? It makes a difference. If they were identical, you have no higher chance of concieving twins than anyone else. If they were fraternal, then your chances are a little bit higher. Best of luck to you.

  • Wow. I never realized that there were so man twin questions out there.

I had my first u/s when I was 7 weeks. There was only one baby on there, and the dr looked pretty good for additional babies. There were none (that we could see.) I am now 16 weeks 5 days and i just found out that I am having twins. I’m in pure shock, and I really hope if you are having twins that you find out much earlier than I did!!!!

Congrats on the pregnancy and good luck.
