Question from FutureMrsBeck

I am 5’8 and my normal weight before pregnancy is 140. I am now 24 weeks pregnant (six months), and I gained last month 5 pounds and this month a total of 8 pounds. My total weight gain so far is 13 pounds.
I dont watch what I eat. I eat whatever I want, and until I am full. I am not working right now so I dont do much. Im not that active. Do you think I will gain more than I should or I will gain the normal range?
The doctor said I gained so far what I am supposed to, and that it is good.
How much do you think I will gain throughout my whole pregnancy based on my details?
For the woman who said I’ll be a fat ass and I dont eat healthy food that is wrong..
I drink 3 bottles of water a day, and also eat my fruit and veggies!!! I get a good source of vitamins and minerals besides my prenatal vitamins.

  • You should gain a total by your ninth month about 25-30 pounds. Good Luck and Congrats!

  • It just all depends on the baby’s growth and your activities. If your doc shows no concern then i wouldn’t worry. I am 5’4 was 135 before and i’ve packed on more than 20 lbs already, it’s gradually slowing down but my doctor has no concerns at this point. I also don’t watch what i eat, i have a desk job and not much activity except a 4 yr old boy who runs around like crazy!!! Not sure what you will gain total, that just depends. But don’t worry if your doc isn’t.

  • they say like 35 is good. but i will tell you, 1st pg 65lbs, 2nd pg 40lbs, 3rd pg 50 lbs, 4th pg (twins) 55 lbs, and this one, 2 weeks left 53lbs so far. it all depends on you and your family. my family tends to gain more because we are all big boned, with wide hips. i will say this much, in the past i have managed to lose it all and then some.

  • Usually 25-35 lbs total is recommended, but women are different, so it can be more or less depending on your body. If your doctor is happy with the gain, then that’s great. =-) Congratulations.

  • 2-3 lbs. in the first trimester and 1 pound every week thereafter. If your dr. says you’re doing okay then I wouldn’t worry about it, but he probably wouldn’t like to hear you don’t watch what you eat or exercise. The way you gain weight is more important than the amount.

  • usually a person is supposed to gain 25-35 pounds during thier 40 weeks. If you start watching what you eat now or exercising you should be just fine, you should be gaining about 1 pound a week now and soon 1-1.5lbs a week. I weighed 126 prepreg. with this pregnancy and at 28 weeks I had already gained 24 lbs! this is my second pregnancy this time I will probably go over the norm. With my first pregnancy I gained about 30 lbs total(same prepreg. weight). Every body is different but if your doctor is concerned about how much wieght you are gaining they will talk to you about it. A good tip to help loose weight after birth (other than exercise) is to breast feed. Congrats and good luck!

  • It sounds like you are doing great! Since you are 24 weeks, you will probably put on at least another 10 pounds before the baby is born, which is fine. For women of normal weight (140 is a great weight for 5’8″), 25-35 pounds is expected. Some gain more, some less….it depends on the individual. If you really want to watch your third trimester gain, start walking now and work your way up to a couple of miles a day. Try not to get overexerted or too hot though and if it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. Drink lots of water! Also, you mentioned that you eat whatever you want. This is probably fine as long as you make sure you are eating the right things. Leafy greens, yogurt, skim milk, lean protein…these are all very important, as well as a good prenatal vitamin. It sounds like you are right on target, though. Just be sure to eat the good stuff!

  • Tina:

Well, I’m not positive on how much you will gain, but I am 5’4 and gained 31lbs. I was suppose to gain bet. 25-30lbs. I stayed pretty active, but I didn’t watch what I ate either. I don’t know if you have a mall around or if you could go for a walk outside. I just went for a short walk everyday. I started out at 5’4 and 119lbs. and I weighed 150lbs. by the end of my pregnancy….also if you exercise while you are pregnant it will help you loose the weight after you have your child…….I also recommend breastfeeding……I was only able to breastfeed for 3 weeks because I dried up but breastfeeding for 3 weeks helped me get back down to 125lbs………..I hope this info. helps………good luck and Congrats!

  • Normal pregnancy weight gain is anywhere between 20 to 40 pounds. And you’ll lose about half of that on the delivery table and even more if you breastfeed.
Don’t stress about your weight too much. Remember all that weight gain is healthy for the baby and you. ^_^

If you want more info on healthy eating during pregnancy, I strongly suggest buying “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” this book is WONDERFUL! It’s helped me through my pregnancy every day of it.

  • i think ur weight will be almost 170lb after this pregnancy.
    but u shouldn’t eat that much.because i used to eat a lot.and i had ‘blood’ sugar problem.:-(

  • I’m 6’1″ and i weighed 160 before pregnancy and I’m 36 weeks and i have gained 40 lbs. everyone is different my doctor say i have gained a healthy weight for my size so dont worry about it and just make sure you eat your vitamins and take care of yourself and your baby….

  • You should gain about 30 pounds, with your baby being about 8 pounds of that total. Also, a good pregnancy food is sushi. It has omega-3 fatty acids which are important for fetal brain development. I know everyone is like oh my gosh raw fish, mercury poisoning, but that’s not a concern anymore. There is less mercury in processed, or raw fish these days.

    Good luck!

  • Textbook case is usually around 25lbs. That is assuming you will be having an average 7lbs baby. Most women gain
    between 10 – 30 lbs. Congratulations.

  • You’re doing fine as far as your weight. Eat all you can eat, while you can. You have 3 months left and most likely you’ll gain about 3-5lbs a month which is about 25-30 lbs through out your whole pregnancy. I’m 5’1 & I so far gained 28lbs through my whole pregnancy & I still got 4 weeks left to go. By what you are saying it looks like you’re not going to gain so much weight throughout your pregnancy. But dont let it full you cause at the last months you’ll blow up like a balloon. I did! But I wouldn’t worry if I was you. Good Luck & Congrats…

  • Well I am 4’9 and I was about 115lbs before my 1st pregnancy and I gained 35 lbs. horrible! I thought just cause I’m pregnant I could eat what I wanted when I wanted..Big mistake! You have to have a healthy lifestyle, eat healthy, be active even if it means 30 minutes of walking, go to the park, put on your mp3 and walk around a couple of times. With my second I gained only 25 pounds because I was more cautious with my food and I had a little more exercise, I walked more and I had a 21/2 yr. old to run after and it was so much easier to put the weight off afterwards but don’t worry just take it slow, don’t stop eating just watch what you eat. You and your baby need to be healthy.
