Question from Lauren R

I am 29 week pregnant. I am going out for dinner for my birthday and want to get a salad with baked goat cheese. I don’t think goat cheese is normally acceptable to eat while pregnant, but is it okay if it’s baked?

  • Yes, baking would kill any listeria hanging around.

I am going to advise you to ask you ob. The risks, even if the cheese isn’t thoroughly cooked, are EXTRAORDINARILY low.

Pregnancy doesn’t stop your life. Don’t listen to Julie…she thinks you should live in a plastic bubble.

  • If it’s baked enough to kill any bacteria, it should be ok. THe only reason goat cheese is a no-no is because it’s not pasteurized like other cheeses (which means it can have bacteria that can be harmful if pregnant). Listeria, I think it’s called.

  • If it’s pasteurized, it should be fine. If you are unsure if you should eat it, call your ob/gyn.

If it’s not pasteurized, it should be heated until bubbly.

  • I just threw up in my mouth a little!

  • Usually when goat cheese is “baked,” it’s just toasted lightly. If you baked it long enough to kill bacteria, I think it’s so soft a cheese that it would melt.

  • of coarse goat cheese is acceptable. it is the best dairy to eat!! goats milk is the closest to a womans milk their is. cows milk is only good for us because of the calcium. other than that it is bad for us. cows milk has its own acid in it that is hard for our acid to break down. look it up you’d be amazed. good question.

  • I think that as long as it’s baked it should be okay your supposed to stay away from unpasturized products but would that be okay if it’s cooked(I think so) plus a sall amount on a salad is probably fine

  • an old wives tales says that eatting feta (goat cheese) will put you in labor. my wife tried it with 1st kid didn’t work but you never know.

  • The reason that you are not supposed to eat some cheeses while you are pregnant is because of a bacteria called Listeria. Goat cheese is dangerous because it is not pasteurized. It poses a slight risk to all adults but is especially dangerous to pregnant woman, who are 20 times more likely to become infected after contact with Listeria. Listeria is killed by pasteurization and cooking. If it is goat cheese on a salad it is most likely going to be breaded and fried for a second or two but I wouldn’t consider that to be cooked because it doesn’t even get hot enough to melt. I wouldn’t take the chance with your baby. If you were to get infected it could cause miscarriage, premature delivery, stillbirth, or neonatal death. You’re almost there…just wait until after you deliver and celebrate with a big goat cheese salad! Hope that helps. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy! :-)
