Question from boz4425

I’m 28 weeks pregnant and have gained 42 pounds!!! I was 130 (at 5’6, slim with muscle mass) and now I’m 172!!! I’m a junkfood junkie so have been giving in to my cravings without mercy and haven’t been excercising regularly. I haven’t gotten wider really – I just have a beachball belly and have gained fat in my arms, legs and face mostly.

My question is – is it possible to lose some of the “bad” weight that I’ve gained and tone up now? Not by going on a diet (as in starving myself or cutting out essential carbs or meats) but as in eating completely healthy (no more junk food) and excercising by walking, swimming, and light strength training.

Will this help me lose the ugly fat? Or will this just only let me maintain where I am? I really want to slim down my now-chubby arms and thighs.

Any advice?
Okay – I’m really wondering how many people on this thing can actually COMREPHEND a question when asked?

Telling me that I’ll jepordize my baby’s health by eating healthy and excercising is ridiculous! That’s what I’m SUPPOSED to be doing and haven’t been.

Also, telling me to give in to my cravings is a stupid idea. A few of them, yes…but if I gave into them all I’d be 250 pounds by now!! And since I crave nothing but junk what good does that do for my baby??? Nothing!! There are no nutrients in junk food!!!

Before you answer – read the question above carefully – it’s very simple. It’s a yes, you can tone up and lose some of the fat if you start doing what you’re supposed to. Or no, you won’t gain any more bad fat if you eat right but you can’t tone up or lose it just yet.
By the way people – my doctor TOLD me to cut the junk food and start excercising!!!! I’m not a high-risk pregnancy. I’m perfectly healthy and young!
Okay – I can see I’m not going to get anywhere with people on this thing. Comprehension must not be a strong point on here.

And swimming is one of the best excercises you can do during pregnancy.

  • yes, make sure it’s a proper diet though as this will go directly to your baby

  • do some gentle exercises like swimming, that would be a good one. you should probably try to cut down if you think you are eating too much junk, but remeber, this is one time in your life where its socially acceptable to gain loads of weight. just enjoy this time of your life before its gone.

  • It is not a good idea. the average Mom should gain between 25-40 pounds. This is baby and placenta. if you don’t feed the body what it needs, you’ll get an underdeveloped brain stem. Please follow your insticts, and eat what you crave. Diet after baby is born healthy.

  • don’t lose weight which will hurt your baby while pregnant.

  • wait until after the baby is born. you dont want to jepardize the babys health. not to mention, your arms will get a constant work out, from holding the baby. and your legs from walking around with it. you can worry about that after the baby is born.

if you are really worried right now, then opt for carrot sticks and ranch, instead of a handful of chips. just dont totally change what you are doing.

  • Its not good to diet while pregnant. what you can do is make sure you start eating healthy foods and not empty calories. If its ok with your doctor, walk, swim, If you do these things you will not gain more fat weight and tone your muscles, you will look and feel better. pregnancy is not forever, all though it feels like , and when you have your healthy baby, you can start working on the extra weight Good Luck **** I will say agian, you can tone up and lose fat while eating and excercising right***

  • I would recommend asking your doctor first. However, I don’t think eating healthy and exercising will do you, or your baby any harm.

  • in my opinion, it is better for you not to lose weight while you are pregnant. alright, you have gained 42 pounds. thats it. if you can, try not to gain more weight. skip junk food, that is for sure. not even coke or diet coke. it is not healthy for the baby. you can be on a healthy diet AFTER delivering your baby. i am just concerned about your baby. walking is great. but i dont think swimming is good. i might be wrong but check it out first or ask your doctor. if i am not mistaken, once i read in a magazine, swimming aint good during pregnancy. i bet you will lose some pounds right away after laboring. dont worry. remember, breastfeeding will burn a lot of calories too… :) stay healthy, k? :D

  • In my experience it’s not a good idea to go on a diet while pregnant (I’ve had three pregnancies where I gained weight!) Best thing to do is eat sensibly – cut out the junk!! And drink lots of water and get some exercise even if its only a half hour walk per day – it will help throughout the rest of the pregnancy and you will feel great – it will help so that you will mostly be gaining baby from now on and not excess and unwanted fat. Swimming can be good, but once your belly gets too big I think it would be quite awkward (talk to your doctor) If interested, pregnant women do go to Weight Watchers – they have a specific program for pregnant women – but they do require your physician’s permission to join – they will guide you in eating healthier – but from what I understand, while you are pregnant, they will not weigh you (that’s for your doctor to do), just help you eat healthier – just a suggestion if you feel you need that support.

You should know too – that just cutting out the junk and getting some exercise daily will help immensely because your body is already burning lots of calories making baby!

Keep in mind that, while pregnant, women tend to gain water too! I gained a phenominal amount of weight with my kids – my last pregnancy was most successful in not gaining excess weight – I just ate like I did without baby in body. If you get hungry fill up on veggies and fruit or healthier options like Smartpop popcorn.

A great idea is to always ask your physician – they best know you and your health and can suggest ways to curb the excess calories that you don’t need to grow a healthy baby.

You should also know, that the weight can come off quite fast after giving birth if you plan to breastfeed – your body uses an enormous amount of calories to make milk to feed baby – so don’t worry about it too much.

    Good luck.

  • of course, instead of picking up a bag of chips for crunching pick up carrots or celery sticks. but I can tell you from experience here that I ate a TON of junkfood and gained about 60lbs during my pregnancy(I looked like a beached whale) but the weight soon left after I had my son and went on a healthy diet and exercise program. also though, the extra weight gain in the arms legs and face could be water weight gain from the pregnancy. this is very common. you should talk to your OB if you are concerned…….good luck

  • Yes, you can lose weight while pregnant, but do so VERY slowly. As in, about 1 lb per week. From what I was told while I was pregnant, burning that fat releases toxins into the body. Doing too much at once could be harmful to your unborn child. I gained quite a bit of weight the first few months, realized I had to cut out giving into cravings, and lost a few pounds. By the time I had my daughter (39 weeks 5 days) I had only gained 19 pounds total. Working out will make labor easier. Walking and yoga are totally safe but one you get to the last six weeks you may want to stick to swimming because it is so low impact. Don’t forget to do your kegels they do help quite a bit. Good luck!! Even if you don’t ‘lose’ weight, you may be losing fat. As the baby grows, and the fat slowly dissipates, your weight may even out. As long as the baby continues to grow and have healthy vital signs, you should be fine. And stay hydrated!!
