Question from Pink_lemur

O.K., I just adopted what I believe to be a pregnant *****. I know how to help deliver pups, and I’m going to take her to the vet. However, I want to know if there is anyway of looking at a dog (not feeling her tummy) and being able to come up with a ruff estimate of how many puppies she’ll have. Yes, the vet will tell me, but I want more creative answers than that. (she’s a boxer).
because the shelter I volunteer at is a piece of crap, and they thought she had already had her puppies.

  • I have a question. If you *adopted* this dog, then why wasn’t it spayed before hand?

  • Without feeling her tummy and before a veterinarian? I guess you could consult your handy crystal ball or call the psychic hotline.

  • Not really. Even x-rays can be wrong. Thanks for adopting her and taking on the responsibility of her babies.

  • If you know how to palpate, you can get a good idea. Feel gently along her sides and you may feel some little walnuts. Keep in mind though that some puppies may be up under her ribs where you can’t feel them. Kudos to you for adopting her. Hope all goes well with the whelping.

  • Did you adopt her because they were gonna put her to sleep? That’s the only way I can see a dog being adopted and not spayed.

I don’t believe there is any way of telling just by looking at her. Sorry.

  • It’s not a good idea for inexperienced people to be palpating a pregnant bit ch. It’s too easy to dislodge the fetuses and cause her to miscarry. So, the answer is no, a vet should be the one to do the palpation.

  • Its kind a hard to figure out how many she’ll have unless she has an ultrasound at the vet. Which costs about $125. My dog just had puppies a week ago and when i took her to the vet i asked if they could feel around to figure out how many she’ll have and they said it was hard to say until she had the ultrasound. But even with he ultrasound its still not very accurate

  • DP:

Just by looking at her ? You can only guess how many. Even then it’s really hard to say. I had a b itch who looked HUGE who 4, had one who I thought hmmm.. 5 or 6 at very most and she had 13.
You can guess.. Or ask the vet, and even that’s not reliable.. I have a friend whose husband is a vet, he checked and said 7, b itch had 14.

  • There is no way to know just by looking at her. (unless you have x-ray vision) you need to feel around, and taking her to the vet will just gaurentee, how many shes gonna have.

  • if she is then just let her rest and if she is good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i do not think there is maybe by oltrasound
