Ensuring that you get regular prenatal care is a cornerstone of a healthy pregnancy. As soon as you find out that you are pregnant, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor. Afterward, assuming that you are healthy without any risk factors, you should continue to get check-ups every month up until the third trimester, when you may want to increase visits to once every two weeks. When it comes to high risk pregnancies, some women must visit their doctors once or twice per week.

Next in line of importance is nutrition and eating habits. Only your health care provider can specify exactly what your caloric intake should be, but generally you’ll need to consume an extra two to three hundred calories per day. These calories should be healthy, as well. Just because you are ?eating for two? doesn’t mean that you have an excuse to eat junk food filled with sugar and high in fat. Keep your diet moderate, and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Always remember to stay away from risky food and drink such as alcohol, sushi, and deli meats.

The more vitamins and minerals you consume, the better you will feel, and the more smoothly your pregnancy will progress. You may also find it beneficial to take supplements such as iron, which many pregnant women lack, and folic acid, which prevents birth defects. Do not rely entirely on supplements, though. Vitamins and minerals are most effective when they come directly from the food you consume. Make sure that you do not overcook vegetables, as the vitamins and minerals contained in the food will diminish.

Other key steps to a healthy pregnancy include staying well hydrated and exercising regularly. Working out will make your body feel better and will prepare you for childbirth. It will also increase your blood flow and prevent you from gaining too much unnecessary weight during pregnancy.

Pregnancy is not always a pleasant experience, but if you follow these general guidelines, you will maximize the chances of having a healthy baby, and minimize pain and discomfort.
